GOONJ
Indian Classical Music holds a rich legacy of diverse singing styles and unique instruments that have evolved over centuries. Unfortunately, many traditional instruments that once shaped our music are now forgotten. To reconnect the new generation with this heritage, our institute organized GOONJ — a three-day exhibition and musical carnival showcasing 32 rare and traditional instruments, including four types of Veena (Saraswati, Vichitra, Triveni, and Ranjan Veena), Ravan Hatta, and Foot-Pumped Harmonium, along with familiar ones like Tabla, Flute, and Dholak.
The event, inaugurated by Indore Commissioner Mr. Sanjay Dubey, featured performances and interactive sessions by artists such as Shri Vivek Bansod, Gaurav Nagor, Anvay Pandit, Atharva Pawar, and Amit Alekar. Senior instrumentalists of Indore were also felicitated for preserving this legacy. Students from 12 leading schools and numerous music enthusiasts participated enthusiastically, making GOONJ a true bridge between past and present generations.
The overwhelming response inspired us to continue this initiative, keeping alive the sound and spirit — the Goonj — of India’s musical heritage.

True patriotism goes beyond mere love for the country — it inspires action and dedication toward its progress. Guided by this spirit, Sangeet Gurukul recreated the legendary song “Vande Mataram”, an initiative envisioned by Shri Gautam Kale. Over 1.5 months, 40 dignitaries — including school principals, the Collector, and renowned musicians — came together to lend their voices to this national song. The project, titled “Vande Mataram Drive – Sangeet Gurukul”, was launched on August 12, 2015, as a heartfelt tribute to India’s unity and pride.
Ustad Jahangir Khan (Tabla) and Ustad Amir Khan (Vocal) were legendary maestros of Indian Classical Music, both hailing from Indore. Yet, their immense contributions remained unrecognized for years. To honor their legacy, Sangeet Gurukul introduced the first-ever awards in their names in 2019 — the Ustad Jahangir Khan Award was presented to Pt. Kiran Deshpande (Bhopal) and the Ustad Amir Khan Award to Pt. Ajay Pohankar (Mumbai).
